Responding to new waiting list data revealing disparities in access to treatment the chief executive of NHS Providers, Daniel Elkeles, said:
"This data shows worrying disparities in access to treatment affecting many patients, particularly women and those from deprived and ethnic minority communities.
"This is unacceptable and goes against all the NHS stands for.
"It also highlights areas of activity where there are particular concerns, such as gynaecology and ear, nose and throat (ENT), which must be addressed.
"Trusts are committed to playing their part and are working with partners in a range of ways to reduce health inequalities.
"The data will help ensure resources are directed to where they are needed most, and will provide a benchmark to help drive progress in the future."
