We can actually do this!

This opening episode in our three-part podcast series showcases bold innovations in integrated mental health care, highlighting efforts to improve population health and deliver timely, patient-centred support.

The two case studies reflect a shared commitment to accessibility, collaboration, and holistic transformation in mental health care.

We also hear from NHS Providers chief executive Daniel Elkeles on why he believes the ambitions of the 10YHP are within reach.

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust

Peter Lewis, chief executive of Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, shares how the trust is delivering integrated, patient-centred care. He describes innovative approaches to improving population health, including redesigned pathways that unite acute paediatrics and CAMHS into a single model for young people in mental health crisis.

The episode also explores rural health hubs that bring care closer to home, and the ‘open mental health’ model, which removes barriers to access through collaborative working.

Collectively, this case study illustrates a bold and holistic transformation strategy that integrates primary care, empowers provider leadership, decentralises service delivery, and advances population health.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust

In this episode, we speak with Lesley Butterworth, head of nursing and patient experience, and Louise Whittaker, advanced paramedic in mental health.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust (YAS) has taken a pioneering step by introducing two advanced paramedic roles specialising in mental health – the first in the UK.

Part of YAS’s mental health programme, the initiative includes dedicated mental health response vehicles (MHRVs) staffed by these specialists to provide timely, community-based care.

YAS also partners with the voluntary sector to create ‘safe spaces’ and has trained over 600 frontline staff to better respond to mental health crises, improving outcomes and reducing pressure on emergency departments.
